BIOGRAPHY
Michael Hoffman is a filmmaker with a diverse and accomplished career. He earned his Bachelor's in Theater Arts from Boise State University, where he co-founded the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. A Rhodes scholar, he studied English Literature at Oxford's Oriel College and made his first feature film, "Privileged," starring Hugh Grant.
Hoffman's relationship with the Sundance Institute began with the workshop of his script "Promised Land." He later directed films like "Some Girls" and the hit comedy "Soapdish." His period romance "Restoration" won two Oscars in 1996. Other notable works include "One Fine Day" and "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," the latter featuring an ensemble cast of stars such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, Calista Flockhart, Dominic West, Anna Friel, Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell, and Rupert Everett.
In 2008, he directed "The Last Station," focusing on Tolstoy's final year, earning accolades and nominations for Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer. Hoffman continued with projects like the 2011 remake of "Gambit" and Nicholas Sparks' "The Best of Me" in 2014.
Recently, Hoffman wrote and directed "Dear Mr. Vidal" for Netflix and is involved in various upcoming projects, including a biopic about Johannes Kepler. He is set to write and direct "American Classic," a TV series starring Kevin Kline. Additionally, he co-wrote a musical based on his film "Restless Natives" scheduled for a national tour in Scotland in spring 2025.
Apart from his filmmaking, Hoffman serves on international film festival juries, chaired juries at festivals like CAMERIMAGE in Poland and Tblisi International Film Festival, and conducts master classes in the UK and Europe.
